Sometimes we are so used to speaking certain words that we don’t stop to think about why we use them. For example, why do we use dad instead of using father? Is there a difference between these two terms? If you want to find out the answer, just keep on reading.
Well, it does have a difference between them. In short, a father is the male parent of the child, the one that shares DNA with the child, the progenitor. A dad, however, is the one that is responsible for taking care of the child. The one that gives love and affection.
These seem like very simple concepts, but they are a little deeper than that. Some details about them will help you to remember which term is correct for the situation that you live in. Read the article to discover more about the difference between dad and father.
The Real Difference Between Dad And Father
As I’ve explained shortly before, a father is not a term of love, but a term that represents biology.
If you say father instead of dad, there is a lack of affection there. Or at least that is what most people will think because we are used to thinking of father as a “grey” term. It represents the male parent of the child biologically speaking since it represents the person that gave the child half of their DNA.
A father is a child’s progenitor, but not necessarily the person that takes care of the child, the person that will love and be there for this kid. A father can or can not participate in the child’s growth and development.
That doesn’t mean that a father can not participate in their child’s life. Of course, they can, but this term generally represents someone that is not very close to the child. Or it is used in a more traditional family to represent the hierarchy. After all, this is a term very connected to the male figure of a family, to a very classical way of thinking about what a family should look like.
Some fathers pay the child’s bills, health, food, education, and more, but they don’t show interest in getting to know their child. When this happens, most likely this child will never think of their father as a dad.
Dad is a term of love, a term full of affection and familiarity. Is a term that kids use for the one they love as a dad, as a strong figure in their life, a figure that cares about them and makes them feel safe. A dad fulfills all the responsibilities commonly associated with the role, both social-cultural and personal.
The main difference between these two terms is that a father has the same DNA as the child, but a dad doesn’t have to have the same DNA as the child.
A dad can be the adoptive father, can be the step-father, an uncle, a grandfather, a brother, a cousin, or even a family friend. A child can have more than one dad. But it will hardly have more than one father.
Remember: some kids don’t have the opportunity to call their parents in the way they want to. Some parents force the child to call them in a certain way. So maybe you will hear a child calling their father as “dad’, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that this child feels very comfortable and happy around their father. They can be forced to call this person as “dad”, even if they don’t feel comfortable doing it so.
It is always important to not judge the situations, at least not before you have access to all the necessary information. One thing that we do know is that having a dad figure is very important in any child’s life. It can help to increase a child’s educational achievement, social stability, curiosity, and much more.
Kids need to have loving parents around them. If these parents are from the same DNA as the child or not, it doesn’t matter, as well as the gender.

Should I Use Dad Or Father?
You need to use what you feel comfortable with.
Don’t call your father dad if you don’t feel like doing it (unless doing so compromises your safety). If you were born or live in a country that has English as its main language, you most likely have different feelings when you think about these two terms.
When you think about father, you may think that this is a cold and impersonal term. You may think that this term is not necessarily connected to feelings such as love, respect, comfort, trust, happiness.
When you think about dad, you may think that this is a happy term, a term that shows someone’s true affection. A dad that represents well the love of a child for the person that took care of them, that helped them even in hard times, a person that was there for them all day, every day.
So you should use the term that you feel is correct to the relationship of the person that you are thinking about right now. If this person is not related to you in biological terms, but you think of them as someone that takes care of you as a dad should, then you probably should call them “dad”. Or you can call them something like daddy, dada, papa, pops, pappy, popa, and more.
Why Are Fathers Called Dad?
Some kids call their fathers dads because they help the kid with more than donating their DNA. These fathers were there to teach the child some things about life, to love them, to take care of them, and to help them during hard times. Or to be happy with them during good times.
The fathers that kids call dad are the ones that care about their children, the ones that don’t run away from their responsibilities.
Or they are the ones that force the kid to call them dad. Unfortunately, this is something common in some toxic relationships between fathers and children. But, of course, not everyone sees it like this.
The truth is that these are subjective terms. So, each person can feel about them differently.
Some people feel that father is the term that represents a person that cares about their child. They do everything to keep the child safe.
Some may think that dad is a term that only kids can use, that grown-ups should not use. Everything is up to how someone feels when they think about these terms.
